Transport conditions of different goods depends on certain criteria for every group or category. In the following article you will learn about normal goods transport and special cargo.

For any type of transport the following have to be considered:

  • Quality criteria
  • Packaging and labeling
  • Loading and strapping on different transports
  • Unstable characteristics

In order to establish the type of transport every factor that can influence the quality and quantity must be considered. Multiple factors like: package and packaging, temperature changes, humidity changes, storage during the transport.

What are special transports?

We call special transports dangerous cargo that require a high degree of attention when moved. Toxic, corrosive, explosive and radioactive substances all need to be transported in best safety conditions as imposed by the law.

How to plan a special transport?

Because special cargo can be very dangerous to everyone that transports them or to those involved in the process, caution is advised.

Dangerous Cargo Experts Committee, including all United Nations, has developed a series of laws and recommendations regarding internal and international dangerous transports made by road, air, railway or ship. Aspects of the required documentation are also mentioned.

In terms of a dangerous cargo, the UN has classified 9 large categories with different tagging and labeling as:

Ammo and explosives – are regulated by internal strict laws

Gas – In terms of properties and characteristics these can be flammable, explosive, corrosive, poisonous or oxidizers.

There is also a chance that some may show more than one property in the aforementioned. In this case the gases can severely affect the nervous system even in small doses. Vapors are toxic and explosive. Cargo must be stable for safe transport

Flammable liquids – can release volatile vapors. With low ignition temperatures, these must be kept away from light, heat and fire sources. Efficient packing is a must.

Flammable solids – have to be kept away from any ignition sources. Water or liquid saturation is used during transport.

Flammable solids and liquids – cargo in this category is susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Can ignite during contact with air. Sudden temperature changes can impede transportation.

Liquids and solids that release volatile vapors – must be kept perfectly dry and away from any water sources. Can release toxic gases.

Oxidizing substances – Nonflammable, but may help flammable materials ignite faster. Must be stored and transported in intact and clean recipients.

Organic peroxides – Highly instable in contact with any heat sources. Can easily ignite. Must be kept in ventilated recipients.

Poisonous substances – Can cause death or severe health issues. Safety equipment is mandatory

Radioactive substances – Strict regulations and documentation for moving

Corrosive materials – Either in liquid or solid form these can emit vapors that cause severe rashes and breathing problems.

Dangerous materials when mixed – each one of these are dangerous on their own, but are not subjected to the aforementioned regulations. Lower risk when transported but still dangerous.

These are the main aspects to be accounted when transporting special cargo. Anyone who wishes to do such a transport should always look for an experienced company who can guarantee full safety.
